Something Fishy History
The physical location of Something Fishy is
an Outer Banks staple. The history of the building itself,
located at milepost 10.5 on the beach road, dates back at least
half a century. The earliest known fact about it is that the
cottage survived the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962, which was one
of the ten worst storms in the United States during the 20th
century. We believe at that time the building was a residential
residence.
Some time later, the cottage became the
first location for Nags Head Hammocks, a local company that
makes hammocks by hand and still operates today from several
locations throughout the area.
In the spring of 1996, Sherri Lemnios, a
prominent local artist, and her husband, Charles, opened the
shop still known today as Something Fishy. Her primary
objective was to provide a physical location where she could
showcase her artwork. Along the way, she store evolved into one
of the notable shopping destinations on the Outer Banks.
Almost a decade later, in 2004, Something
Fishy changed ownership. Michael McVearry, who has owned the
property on which the building stands for over thirty years,
became the president. He quickly expanded the building and the
inventory, making Something Fishy the must-see Outer Banks
shopping destination that it is today.
In the summer of 2010, the store took a
giant leap into the twenty-first century, creating an online
shopping experience for its customers. We’re at the beginning
of this journey and can’t wait to see how it turns out! |
